Product Description

Annie Heloise Abel’s The American Indian As Slaveholder And Secessionist; The American Indian As Participant In The Civil War; The American Indian Under Reconstruction.

This work is a detailed and scholarly study of an almost entirely overlooked aspect of the Civil War.

The first two volumes explain the source and extent of Indian support for the Confederacy; while the third concentrates on the general situation in the Indian Territory and its relationship to Texas and Arkansas. Also, it is a history of the Civil War in the Indian Territory that is not to be overlooked. Quite scarce and almost impossible to find!

Annie Heloise Abel (1873-1947) was one of the first thirty women to earn a Ph.D. in History in the United States. She received the Justin Winsor Prize from the American Historical Association in 1906 for her achievements in writing scholarly American history. This was at a time when only the study of European political and diplomatic history was considered proper work for a serious scholar. Abel’s work describing the political, economic, and social life of Native Americans, and particularly their use of slavery and their attitudes toward it, was revolutionary for the time, and remains enormously valuable.

Light sunning; light wear; else very good, with top edge gilt and deckled edges.
