A graduate of West Point, Rosecrans served as a professor at the academy and in engineering assignments before leaving the Army to pursue a career in civil engineering. In addition to his Civil War service (Rich Mountain, Iuka, Second Corinth, Stones River, Tullahoma, Chickamauga, Prices Raid) Rosecrans was an American inventor, coal-oil company executive, diplomat, and politician.
