Product Description

This copy of Blanchard’s Abraham Lincoln the Type of American Genius is from the Library of Chicago Mayor, Julian Rumsey.

Rufus Blanchard attempts to capture the Type of American Genius in poetry, with allegorical characters symbolizing different aspects of American character.

The poet described the Type as “the mental force, the conscience, the destiny of the nation; and these begin not in the sunshine of flattery, not in the plentitude of luxury, but often from beneath the clouds of grief and adversity.” Blanchard’s mystic spirit of America precedes Stephen Vincent Benet and Carl Sandburg.

Minimal rubbing and shelf wear; quite bright; very good.

This copy was owned by Chicago’s Civil War Mayor Julian Rumsey, with signature on book plate.
