Product Description

Douglass, Frederick.   MY BONDAGE AND FREEDOM.  PART I. – LIFE AS A SLAVE.  PART II. – LIFE AS A FREEMAN.  New York and Auburn: 1855.  1st ed., 464(8)p., ft., plates

Douglass’ second autobiographical work, published ten years after the first – and a longer, more complex and much more assured work.

In a letter from Douglass quoted in the Editor’s Preface, he refers to this as a “full account of my life as a slave and my life as a freeman.”  Divided into two parts: the first and longer part treats in detail his daily life in Baltimore, where he was treated relatively kindly and where he taught himself to write; and on a Maryland plantation and at the farm of Covey, the “slave breaker.”  Much on plantation life, his personal treatment and floggings, his escape to liberty and subsequent introduction to abolitionists.

Weak front hinge; light foxing.; light. chipping edges lightly rubbed; else very good.
