Product Description

Douglas Southall Freeman’s  R. E. Lee: A Biography, in first edition, signed.

Historian and editor, Freeman was one of our nation’s leading authorities on the history of the Confederacy. This Pulitzer Prize-winning life of Lee was the result of nineteen years of devotion to the subject; the work is one of the most important and enduring works in American biography.

Historian Liddell Hart said of it, “As a work of military history, I have no hesitation in ranking it almost in a class by itself.” Poet Stephen Vincent Benet, author of John Brown’s Body, wrote “There is a monument – and a fine one – to Robert E. Lee at Lexington. But this one, I think, will last as long.”

Freeman himself saw a poetry in Lee’s life. Lee lived through family disgrace, loss, war, and the seemingly inevitable dilemma of choosing between his nation and his state. While later historians have revealed a much more complicated man than Freeman observed, they would not have achieved their perspective without viewing Lee from Freeman’s shoulders.
