A fine political letter at a time Garfield was the undisputed leader of the House of Representatives. In January 1880 he was elected to the U.S. Senate and in June of the same year was nominated as the Republican presidential standard bearer, winning in November – but assassinated, dying just six months into his term.
In full… Columbus: Sept. 27, 1877 Jno. Reed Esq. / Chester, O. My Dear Sir, I expected to spend the last two weeks of the campaign in the 19th Dist.; but the State Central Committee arranged for two debates between Mr. Pendelton and myself which with other meetings in the central positions of the State, will use up this week. I can therefore spend but one week in our District. The prospects for our carrying the state are brightening every day, and I feel confident we shall succeed if the Reserve brings out its vote. I take the liberty of suggesting that special efforts be made to put the whole strenth (sic) of our townships into line on election day. It will be most unfortunate if the State should be lost when a little extra exertion of the Reserve would save it. Very Truly Yours, J A Garfield
