Autograph Letter signed by James A. Garfield, as a Colonel in the 42nd Ohio Infantry. Columbus, (Ohio): September 6, 1861. 4to.; 1p.

The letter to Wallace J. Ford, a close friend of and later Congressional secretary to Garfield, is about a horse that Ford had purchased for Garfield, advising him to “keep the horse under training for a while yet. I have engaged his equipage which will be here next Thursday….” Garfield closes with a statement of personal pride: “I was this morning promoted to a Colonelcy.”

Framed with a lithograph portrait.
