Grant, Ulysses S. Autograph Document, signed (“U. S. Grant / Maj. Gen.”) Holly Springs, Miss.: 30 Dec. 1862. 7-1/2 x 4-1/4 inches (sight); 28-1/4 x 16-3/4 inches (overall).
In full: “Received, of 1st Lieut. John C. Grierson B.Q.M. 6th Illinois Cavalry and (1) captured horse to be use (sic) as private property, having lost and disabled all my private horses brought with me in the field.”
The 6th Illinois Cavalry was mustered into service on November 19, 1861 at Camp Butler, Illinois, and mustered out on November 20, 1865. The regiment suffered 5 officers and 60 enlisted men who were killed in action or who died of their wounds and 8 officers and 328 enlisted men who died of disease. John C. Grierson was the Quarter Master.
