Product Description

Abraham Lincoln Signature on Printed Vellum Military Appointment.

For Charles H. ____ as Captain in the Veteran Reserve Corps.

Lincoln’s signature, though partly written over a fold, is dark, bold, and an excellent example. The numerous wrinkles of the vellum dramatically shows its origin as sheep’s skin and adds that dimension to the story.  The ink writing of the accomplishment is lighter than Lincoln’s signature, being a different ink of the four strains extant in Lincoln’s time, perhaps having too much water in the iron gall solution. The dark, blue seal is intact.

Countersigned as usual at the top by Edward Townsend as Assistant Adjutant General of the Army. A dramatic document wherein Lincoln’s signature stands out!

Lincoln, Abraham. Partly Printed Vellum Document, signed “Abraham Lincoln” and counter-signed by Edwin M. Stanton as Secretary of War. Washington: 1 August 1864. Folio; 1p.

Daniel Weinberg, president of Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, talks about this document in our Featured Lincoln Signatures video. Take a Look.
