Product Description

These Abraham Lincoln photographs are gelatin silver prints, produced from copies taken directly off original “life” negatives by photographer George B. Ayers. They were originally taken in June of 1860 by Alexander Hesler.

Missing for over 40 years, when the original plates surfaced in 1932, they were broken in shipping. Twenty years later Springfield Lincoln collector King V. Hostick discovered original copy plates, the very plates that produced these present wonderful photographs.   Excellent; clear with nice contrast.

This set belonged to Illinois Governor Stratton. The state’s 32nd Governor, he served from 1953-1961. Adhered to the back or each is a letter from then-Secretary of State Please see Charles F. Carpenter.
