Gerald McMurtry’s biography of Ben Hardin Helm, the“Rebel” Brother-in-Law of Abraham Lincoln in 1st edition.
The tragedy of Ben Hardin Helm, the Confederate general and brother-in-law of Abraham Lincoln, illustrated the brother against brother nature of the Civil War. McMurtry’s small monograph is the best treatment of Helm’s biography available, even given its limited distribution to a single room full of Lincoln-lovers.
Gerald McMurtry was the director of the Department of Lincolniana at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee. This short biography was the first publication of the Civil War Round Table, the Chicago-based fellowship that inspired the worldwide Civil War Round Table movement.
This small, handsome book was limited to 225 copies, signed by the author, and given out to members of the group at the October, 1943 meeting.
