Sandburg, Carl. STEICHEN: THE PHOTOGRAPHER. Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1961. Signed on limitation page (596 of 925 copies) by Sandburg and Steichen. First Edition. 80p., with text contributed by Carl Sandburg (Steichen’s brother-in-law), Alexander Liberman, Rene d’Harnoncourt, and Steichen.
Images of people (Garbo, Swanson, Crawford, Chaplin), places (the Flatiron Building in 1905, the USS Lexington in 1943), and ideas. Two newspaper obituary articles and a Vogue magazine photo of Steichen pasted onto inside front and rear boards.
A desirable book not only for Sandburg collectors, but also for the evocative photography itself – each a true work of art.
Very good condition; dampstaining has only slightly curled the first few pages, but appears on the boards and in the gutters of a few pages; gilding on spine and front board intact and bright. Inside front and rear boards have some staining. Signed by previous owner.
