Autograph Letter signed by John Tyler. Washington, DC: N.D. Although not dated, it apparently was written and signed while Tyler was President, since the docket “President Tyler” is noted in an upper corner.
The letter is written to “Mr. Spencer” who doubtless was John Canfield Spencer, Tyler’s Secretary of the Treasury during 1843-1844. In part: “Doctor Lockwood was here — I know however of no specific grounds of objection …Perhaps the Collector may be ready to state the specific grounds — if they are political it is best to consider them before acting.”
