Description

A Vicksburg Daily Citizen, from July 2, 1863 Edited and published in besieged Vicksburg.

The Citizen had exhausted its newsprint and was appearing on wallpaper by the time the city fell.

On July 4th Vicksburg surrendered; the publisher fled and the Union forces found the type of the Citizen still in place on the press.  They replaced two thirds of the last column with other matter already in type and added the famous “Note” at the end: “Two days bring about great changes. The banner of the Union floats over Vicksburg –The Citizen lives to see it.  For the last time it appears on “Wall-paper.”  No more will it eulogize the luxury of mule-meat and fricasseed kitten –urge Southern warriors to such diet never more.  This is the last wallpaper, and is, excepting this note, from the type as we found them.  It will be valuable hereafter as a curiosity.” Indeed!

This copy meets every typographical point established by the Library of Congress for an original. In excellent condition; central fold mark; larger than usual margins, with edges a bit serrated as usual.
