Abraham Lincoln Autograph Signature on an Endorsement, signed in pencil.

Lincoln’s wrote at the end of the envelope, perpendicular to the address, “Submitted to the Sec. of War.”

Being in pencil, it is interesting to speculate: did Lincoln write this while sitting on the edge of John Hay’s bed in the middle of the night – ala that famous scene in Steven Spielberg’s film, Lincoln; which would explain the pencil, since Lincoln would not have had an ink pen and inkwell with him.

Excellent, with both pencil and ink address bold; lt. toning at each edge; lt. (ink?) stains; very small old inner tape repair; originally opened at the top, some of the original glue for the flap is still evident. The letter originally enclosed in the envelope is not present.

Lincoln, Abraham. Autograph Endorsement, signed “A. Lincoln” in pencil, on an envelope addressed “The President of the U.S. / Executive Mansion” in ink. [8-1/4” x 3-1/2”]
