Description

M.T. Cicero’s Cato Major is the second edition of what Franklin thought was the masterpiece of his printer’s art.

The first edition (1744) was the first classic work translated and printed in North America. James Logan, the eminent Quaker and the best scholar in Pennsylvania, translated one Roman statesman-philosopher writing about another.

A SCARCE copy of Franklin’s personal favorite. Superbly rebound in 1/2 leather with marbled boards & new end pages.

Text lightly foxed; lightly chipped at edges; very slight mildew.

Franklin, Benjamin. M.T. Cicero’s Cato Major, or Discourse on Old Age. Addressed to Titus Pomponius Atticus. With Explanatory Notes. London: Printed for Fielding and Walker, 1778. 163p., frontispiece.
