Benson J. Lossing, A History of the Civil War

Brilliant Illustrated History for the Fiftieth Anniversary!

Benson Lossing’s A History of the Civil War is a beautiful commemorative history, published at the fiftieth anniversary of the Civil War, featuring hundreds of photos by Mathew Brady, and vivid full color frontispieces. Illustrators included some of the finest talents of the day, including Thure de Thulstrup and Henry Ogden.

Published in sixteen parts, each part in blue wrappers, approximately 8 ” x 12”. The whole is encased in blue boards that tie the bundle in ribbons.

Lossing and Brady were legends in their time, but the contributions by the younger Henry A. Ogden helped further enhance his growing reputation as the finest color illustrator of American historical scenes of his time. Ogden’s work had already helped to make the Century Company’s Battles and Leaders of the Civil War an incomparable publication. His illustrations of Meade at Gettysburg (Section 6), and Sheridan’s Ride (Section 7), provide excellent examples of his most popular work.

Outer boards stained and mottled; lightly sunned at extremities; individual sections in blue wrappers, some chipped; lightly sunned at extremities; section 1 out of wrappers, but with wraps present; section 16 has chipped wrappers and light sunning; color frontispieces generally bright and clean; Overall very good.
