Dabney Herndon Maury was commissioned a general in the Confederate army in 1862. The career regular army officer authored this manual on dismounted cavalry tactics in 1858, while serving as the U.S. Army’s Superintendent of Cavalry School at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania.
Thousands of Confederate troops learned their cavalry drill from pamphlets such as this one, republished by the Confederacy in 1861.
