D. Porter Marshall produced one of the first histories of possibly the most prominent regiment recruited from the city of Pittsburgh with “Company K,” 155th Pa, Volunteer Zouaves.

The 155th Pennsylvania regiment was one of the most spectacularly outfitted unfits of the Army of the Potomac, decked out in colorful North African-styled zouave regalia. The look befitted the fighting qualities of the men, as the regiment covered itself in glory on battlefields from Antietam to Appomattox. Association with the V Corps assured them a place in the line of battle in the hardest fighting of the war, and one of their monuments sits proudly atop Little Round Top at Gettysburg.

Marshall’s memoir, along with Under the Maltese Cross demonstrate the close association between Union regiments and the communities that produced them, not only during the war, but for the generations that followed.

Repaired hinges; lightly rubbed; light foxing; light toning; else very good.
