Lincoln Conspirators, David Herold, Carte de Visite, Gardner Backmark
Surrendered at Garrett’s Farm
A carte de visite of David Herold, Lincoln Conspirator.
This is a cropped image of a photograph taken while Herold was in shackles on the Montauk or Saugus. In the full image, Harold is seated before the gun turret. These are considered among the earliest of “mug shot.”
There was an insatiable public desire to obtain images of the conspirators, so Alexander Gardner readily shared and sold this, and other photographs of the conspirators.
Harold can be seen in the Execution Photograph “Adjusting the Ropes.” He is second from the right. George Atzerodt is cringing from the sight of the rope being placed around Harold’s neck.
