Douglas Southall Freeman’s R. E. Lee: A Biography was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1935. This is the edition released after he received the award. The definitive biography of Lee, exhaustively researched, vivid, balanced, and judicious. Freeman began work on Lee’s biography in 1926; finishing in 1933. It is estimated Freeman had given 6,100 hours of work on the publication.
