Franklin Pierce and Jeff Davis both sign this Military Commission Document, appointing John McCleary Brevet 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
John McCleary, an 1850 graduate of West Point from Ohio, is here promoted to the rank of brevet 2nd Lieutenant.
A regular through-and-through, McCleary remained with the 6th Infantry Regiment throughout his career. During the Civil War he was advanced to the rank of Brevet Major for “gallant and meritorious conduct” at the battle of Gettysburg for action in the Wheatfield July 2, 1863.
Lightly stained and mildewed throughout with light chips at extremities and two holes along the right-hand fold. Seal lightly stained but complete. Pierce’s signature is bold; Davis’ is lighter but readable.
