Sheridan signs with the rank of Lieutenant General, a rank he was awarded in 1869.
During the aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire, Mayor Roswell B. Mason put the city under Martial Law. Sheridan was put in charge of enforcement. Martial Law was lifted in a few days. The City of Chicago honors him today. One of the longest streets is named after him. There is a large statue of his at the start of Sheridan Road. The Sheridan Monument by Gutzon Borglum was installed in 1923.
