Harry Truman, typed letter, signed.

Truman is replying to a letter.  He continues, “If you added Andrew Jackson after Thomas Jefferson and Grove Cleveland after Abraham Lincoln, you and I would be in complete agreement about our great Presidents.”

It is no wonder that Truman, an ideological Democrat, admired Cleveland: he had been a Democrat in an age of only Republican presidents and, as a youth, had vividly remembered that his own father, John Truman, upon Cleveland’s presidential victory, had ridden a horse in a torchlight parade and placed a flag on top of a tower of their home.

Truman, Harry. Typed Letter, signed.  Kansas City:  9 January 1957.  4to.; 1p.  To Kenneth R. Whittemore.
