This was the rulebook for West Point’s Class of 1839, which included Civil War generals Isaac Stevens, Henry W. Halleck, Jeremy Gilmer, Alexander Lawton, James Ricketts, Edward Ord, Henry J. Hunt, Edward Canby and others.
This copy belonged to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Henry Galt of Botetourt Virginia, a member of the West Point Board of Visitors, and decorated veteran of the battles of Contreras and Churubusco. Signed “P. H. Galt / Bd of Visitors” and “Wm. R. Galt / Buchanan / Bot. Co. Va.”
Front spine very lightly shaken; light toning and foxing throughout; bumped; lightly rubbed; and light chipping at the extremities; else very good.
