Often forgotten amidst his civil rights works and the Vietnam buildup, President Johnson was able to get through Congress important environmental legislation, including the Land and Water Conservation Fund Act, the Water Quality Act, and the Highway Beautification Act.
“A More Beautiful America…” is a compilation of quotes from LBJ, accompanied by black and white Ansel Adams photographs of America’s natural beauty, expressing how much conservation and the environment were part of the “Great Society.”
Message on Natural Beauty is Johnson’s February 8, 1965 special message to Congress, marking the first time a President had declared enhancement of natural beauty a national goal. It was also the first time a President warned of the environmental risk of carbon dioxide pollution from fossil fuels.
