Patrick Schroeder’s We Came to Fight: The History of the 5th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry, Duryee’s Zouaves (1863-1865) tells the story of a sometimes flawed but nonetheless heroic band of soldiers.

Duryee’s Zouaves endured the Spartan discipline of their officers and suffered the horrific carnage of U.S. Grant’s inexorable offensive toward Richmond. Drawing upon previously untapped archival material and the unpublished letters, diaries, and photographs of participants, Patrick Schroeder traces the history of DuryĆ©e’s Zouaves from the garrison town of Alexandria to the slaughter ground of Cold Harbor and Petersburg. Contains numerous photographs of men of the regiment, and a complete roster. Foreword by Brian H. Pohanka.

As new; dust jacket. Inscribed and signed twice by the author.
