This Memoir of a New Jersey-born Rebel with much on the Civil War in the West, as well as the Mexican War.

Wounded at the Battles of Monterrey and Buena Vista, French was awarded a congressional award and a sword from the State of New Jersey. His Civil War service includes an appointment to Chief of Ordnance of the state of Mississippi; Brigadier General in the provisional army of the CSA, and an appointment to Major General in 1862. His service in the west includes serving under Joe Johnston at Vicksburg and Leonidas Polk.
