Wales W. Wood’s A History of the Ninety-Fifth Regiment Illinois Infantry tells the history of the operations of this western regiment includes service at Vicksburg, The Red River Campaign, Brice’s Crossroads, and the Mobile Campaign.
The regiment, from Boone and McHenry counties organized at Rockford during Lincoln’s call for 300,000 more volunteers in 1862. The 95th featured the now-famous female soldier, Albert D. J. Cashier (Jennie Hodgers).
At the time of writing Adjutant Wood did not know Cashier’s secret, and she appears on the roster only as an honored private and veteran.
