Chicago Mourns Mr. Lincoln
Description
This albumen photograph of Chicago’s City Hall was taken during the visitation for Lincoln in Chicago. The Chicago funeral was the second to the last one, preceding the Springfield homecoming.
This is a later photo. It is a photo made from Samuel Fassett’s original. The original photo has a taller flagstaff. Other than that, much of the original detail remains. The bunting on the surrounding buildings is very visible, and the mourning trim around the pillars that support the cupola. It is very detailed for a copy print, especially.
This Chicago City Hall would go up in flames six years later in the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.
Very Good, with some edge chipping and staining, pinhole at bottom, some minor lose to corners; some albumen loss. Else good. Verso has “Pres. Lincoln Lying in State” handwritten in brown marker.
(Lincoln Funeral). Photograph of Chicago’s City Hall during the visitation for Abraham Lincoln. Chicago, N.d., 10 1/2″ x 8 3/4″.
