This albumen composite photo, titled Les Défenseurs de L’Union Américaine, features all the major players in defending the union. It was printed buring the second half of the 19th century. The translation below the title indicates it is based on an original photograph from Newark, New Jersey.
The key below lists all 42 individuals, neatly organized in seven columns. Amongst the Union leaders present are Commander-in-Chief Abraham Lincoln and familiar names such as Grant, Sherman, Halleck, McClellan, Sickles, Fremont, Meagher, and Corcoran. Elmer Ellsworth, Cassius M. Clay, and Admiral Foote are also present.
Excellent contrast and clarity of the individual images. Publication line trimmed (but we’re familiar with this artifact and have supplied that information).
