Description
Carl Sandburg’s Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years & Abraham Lincoln: The War Years defined not just how a generation of Americans saw Lincoln, but how they saw themselves. Sandburg collected a huge amount of information on Lincoln for this work, originally published in 1926 and 1939.
The Prairie Years covers Lincoln’s life up to 1861 and was praised for presenting a more folksy, “real” Lincoln, as opposed to a cold statue. The War Years were written over the next dozen years while American readers waited impatiently for the completion of the magisterial effort.
Sandburg’s interpretation is that of a poet, and his work is not intended as an academic biography. They are nonetheless beautifully written, poetic works. The poet of Galesburg was raised in the same milieu as Lincoln and that in itself helped Sandburg understand and present the Illinois Lincoln.
This Sangamon Edition was published by Scribners in 1947, and provided the public with a uniformly designed six-volume set.
All six volumes have usual toning and shelf wear; with some headband denting. Otherwise they are bright in their red cloth, which usually fades quickly. This is a handsome set.
