Description

Pettibone Brothers Manufacturing Company designed brilliant chromolithograph service certificates for the Army and Navy Record Company in the 1880’s so that Union veterans could have a keepsake of their service.

This certificate commemorates the service of William Ashcroft of Company G, 15th New Jersey Infantry Regiment. The 15th New Jersey served from 1862 until the end of the war and saw action in some of the most brutal battles of the Army of the Potomac. Ashcroft fought in almost all these battles and was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville and at the infamous “Mule Shoe” at Spotsylvania, May 12, 1864. After each wounding Ashcroft returned to duty as was honorable discharged at the end of the war. Ashcroft presented the certificate to his family – wife Sarah and children Emma and Joseph – in November, 1909.

Light damp stain along bottom of chromolithograph; else clear and attractive. This vividly colored example is in near fine condition and in contemporary gilt frame.

Civil War Certificate of Service for William Ashcroft of New Jersey, Company G, 15th New Jersey (Chromolithograph). Pettibone Bros. Mfg., 1883. 23” x 29”, framed.
