Charles Francis Adams gives his own copy of his grandfather’s biography, The Life of John Adams….to a colleague who served under him; and who named his some after Charles Francis. Charles Francis Adams was an American historical editor, writer, politician, and diplomat.
During the Civil War, C. F. Adams served as the United States Minister to the United Kingdom under Abraham Lincoln. There he played a key role in keeping the British government neutral and not diplomatically recognizing the Confederacy.
C. F. Adams had seven children, including John Quincy II, Charles Jr., Henry, and Brooks.
The recipient, Dennis R. Alward was Assistant Secretary to U.S. Legation at London, 1864-1868. He named is son Charles Francis Adams Alward.
Inscription reads “Dennis R. Alward / with the regards of /Charles Francis Adams/30 April 1868.
The bookplate of Charles Francis Adams is adhered to the interior of the front board.
