Abraham & Mary Lincoln, Sartain Print Set

Offering an Abraham and Mary Lincoln print set, by William Sartain. Sartain was one of the 19th Century’s most prolific and popular printmakers. A master of the mezzotint, he is well known for the drama and lush appearance that are the hallmarks of his work. He is known for his command of greys, and his dense, velvety black. 

The Abraham Lincoln print seems to be based on O-94, a photo taken in 1864 by Anthony Berger at Brady’s Washington studio.  The Mary Lincoln print is based on ML O-6, a photograph of Mary taken in 1861. Unfortunately, we have no information on the photographer or the location. Caption of both reads: “Engraved & Published by William Sartain 728 Sansom St. Phila.”

Excellent condition, Abraham is evenly toned,  Mary has only minor edge toning; Mary has an irregular left margin, easily matted out.

NOTE: These are shrinkwrapped; there is some unavoidable reflection on the photographs. The prints are solid and bright!
