Offering a signed photograph of Jane Addams, with a signed card.
The founder of Hull House, the first settlement house in the United States, Addams devoted her life to doing good. A tireless social reformer, Addams, joined forces with other progressive women reformers of the era. She was instrumental in successfully lobbying for the establishment of a juvenile court system, better urban sanitation and factory laws, protective labor legislation for women. Addams was a founding member of the National Child Labor Committee, having a significant role in passing the Federal Child Labor Law in 1916. She was active in the women’s suffrage movement as an officer in the National American Women’s Suffrage Association and pro-suffrage columnist. She was also among the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
A sepia-toned photo, Addams looks straight at the viewer. It has a 1924 Copyright signed Moffett / Chicago. Moffett was the most prestigious photographic studio in Chicago during the era. The Explore Chicago Collection holds 50,000 Moffett negatives.
The photograph has minor toning and soiling, with overall even fading. Inscription reads “Faithfully yours Jane Addams.”
The card has overall even toning, with minimal soiling, it reads “Jane Addams /Hull – House / Chicago.”
Both items are hinged to the mat and are easily removable.
