10% Duty on Smoking Opium

In stock

Description

This Document, signed by Salmon P. Chase on Treasury Department stationery, acknowledges that one Fook Yuen was assessed “a discriminating duty of 10 percent…on certain Smoking Opium imported by him, for American Steamer ‘Oregon’.”

Chase referred Collector James to an earlier similar case in which he (James) had been overruled, and that he must adjust the claim herein.

Very good; left margin with soiled by earlier adherence.  Chase’s autograph is the usual small and tight application.

Chase, Salmon P.  Manuscript Letter, signed “S. P. Chase,” on Treasury Dept. stationery, Washington:  20 May 1864.  4to.; 1p.  To Charles James, Collector, San Francisco.
