Ulysses S. Grant, Large Photograph, Hand-colored

Description

Offering an unusually large, hand-colored photograph of General Grant. We are unsure if this is a salt print or an uncoated albumen; it was probably 16″ x 20″ before trimming.

Grant is shown at half-length, seated, wearing his uniform jacket with 3-star Lt. General’s shoulder straps. The entire image has been vibrantly and expertly hand-colored. The detail on Grant’s hair, and the texture of the fabric are exquisite.

Very good, overall; with top corners rounded (probably from framing) a small corner chip/crease at lower left and old tack holes in side margins. All are  clear of image; easily matted out. There is a black smudge on sleeve near Grant’s right wrist. A skilled painter could probably over-paint it with very little work.
