Description

General George B. McClellan contributed McClellan’s Own Story to Charles Webster & Company for their famous “Shoulder Strap” series of Civil War memoirs.

James I. Robertson, Jr., called McClellan’s Own Story a “classic rationalization by one of the war’s most controversial figures.” It may be that but given the general’s controversial career the rationalization hardly seems more indulgent than any other memoir. Where would students of the war be without The Young Napoleon’s take on The Young Napoleon’s career?

The Webster “Shoulder Strap” series is one of the most collectible sets of publications to come out of the post-war rage for memoirs and first-hand accounts from major figures of the war. McClellan’s Own Story is an essential part of the set and must sit on any bookshelf next to Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant and Memoirs of Gen. W. T. Sherman.

This volume has mildly darkened spine – expertly repaired at the headband and footband – lightly mottled boards; very lightly bumped. Else in very good condition. Owner’s bookplate pasted-in the front end page and two gift inscriptions dated Christmas of 1887.
