Tice was first recognized by Edward Steichen, brother-in-law of Carl Sandburg. During World War II Steichen served as director of the U.S. Naval Photographic Institute, overseeing all combat photography exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art. Steichen selected one of Tice’s official Navy photographs for the Museum of Modern Art’s Collection. In the 1970’s Tice became the last printer to Steichen.

The photographs in this book evoke a sense of Lincoln as omnipresent, silently watching all of us. The photos are urban and small town, heroic and ironic. From the grandeur of Augustus St. Gaudens, to the pedestrian former location of Lincoln Carpet & Tile in Chicago, prophetic and profane, this book features Lincoln in all his glory and grit.
