Description

Maime Eisenhower signs her autograph on a photograph. This photo appears to be part of the portraits of Mrs. Eisenhower taken during the visit of Queen Elizabeth on October 17, 1957.

As first lady, Mamie had nearly total control over the expenses and social side of the White House. Her frugality was apparent in White House budgeting throughout her time as First Lady. She showed little interest in politics. Although it was never an official policy, her tenure was dominated by the idea that women should return to being wives and mothers after World War II. She was a popular first lady, and recognized as a fashion icon, known for her iconic bangs and frequent use of the color pink.

Eisenhower, Mamie Doud. Photograph, Signed. Washington, DC, n.d.; 8″ x 10″ black and white photograph, framed; overall 9 1/2″ x 11″.
