Richard Miller’s Harvard’s Civil War tells the story of a Union regiment based upon the elite community of Boston Brahims.

The 20th Massachusetts was led by a cadre of great men and scholars, but immigrants of the laboring classes carried the muskets. The regiment also had the fortune (good or bad) to occupy the most dangerous positions on a dozen bloody fields, leading to a long butcher’s bill amongst officers and men alike.

The leading men of the day, and of generations that followed, serving in the regiment included Oliver Wendall Holmes, Jr., William Lowell Putnam, James Russell Lowell, Paul Joseph Revere, Sumner Paine, and William Francis Bartlett. Miller’s fascinating unit history covers the long and bloody military history of the 20th but also the social history of a regiment that came to symbolize Harvard and its elite alumni.
