Description

Veterans Lucien Crooker, Henry Nourse, John C. Brown and Milton Haney comprised the committee that produced The Story of the Fifty-Fifth Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry.

They wrote the book in distinct parts with each contributor authoring his own part. The contributions of Crooker and Nourse are of particular interest in that the writers reflect a sharpness in attitude toward their commanders and toward the home front that are uncommon in unit histories. Crooker, whose section covers the 1862 Battle of Shiloh takes particular care to assemble an exhaustive account of the battle on the Union left on April 6, because the veterans felt that their service and losses were ignored by journalists and historians. Nourse contributes as many side-swipes of military authorities in his account of the Vicksburg campaign.

A valuable and unique account of life and hardship in the ranks of the Union’s most prominent western army. Hinges tightly repaired with new headband and footer on spine; lightly foxed and lightly toned; else very good.
