Description

Frederick Volck created this stunning bust of Grant in 1869, at Richmond, VA.

Volck was born in Germany, as a young man he moved to Virginia where he was employed by the Confederate Naval Ordnance and Hydrography Department. His brother Adalbert, a satirist and caricaturist, was also actively involved in the Confederacy.

In excellent condition, this bust is the deepest shade that black can be. There is a matching Robert E. Lee version, too.

The signature and inscription read “U.S. President, Frederick Volck, 1869 Richmond, Virginia” at rear. Inscribed “U.S. Grant” at base; mounted to a round beveled granite base.

Volck, Frederick. Ulysses S. Grant Bronze Portrait Bust with Patina.  Richmond: c1869. Features a portrait bust of “Ulysses S. Grant” H: 19″ x W: 12″ x L: 10″.
