Description

Writing from his home in Baton Rouge, Taylor responds to the request of a collector.  After acknowledging the receipt of his “esteemed letter,” Taylor writes, “you say – ‘Having the autographs of all our past Presidents I feel desirous of adding yours to the number, by complying with my request you will confer a favor &c.’”  Taylor continues, “which I now do with much pleasure.”  In closing, the President-Elect sends “my best wishes for your continued health and prosperity through a long life.”  Signing with his military rank; that stopped only after he was inaugurated.

Taylor had the 3rd shortest presidency, dying 14 months into his term; letters written after his election to the presidency are especially sought-after.

Full letters in Taylor’s hand have become incredibly scarce; one so carefully written, so fulsome, and so bold even more so.

Excellent, darkly penned, and readable; being a rare full letter from this period in his life.

Taylor, Zachary. Autograph Letter, signed “Z. Taylor, Maj. Genl, / U.S. Army” written as President-Elect.  (Baton Rouge)  27 December 1848.  Oblong 4to; 1p.
