Ebenezer Hannaford sat down soon after the Civil War to document the war record of Cincinnati’s Guthrie Greys, the 6th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, with The Story of a Regiment. This proximity to events gives Hannaford’s account a sense of freshness and authenticity.

Organized from two Cincinnati militia companies, the 6th Ohio saw heavy action at Shiloh, Stones River, and Chattanooga. These “Guthrie Greys” militia units represented almost all the competent militia in Ohio at the outset of the war. When the war came the city rallied to the companies and built the 6th Ohio around them.

Prominent men associated with the 6th Ohio include George B. McClellan, who declined an invitation to be the regiment’s major in 1861, and Colonel Nicholas Longworth Anderson, nephew of Major Robert Anderson of Fort Sumter.

This account is reliable and rich in detail, including evocative accounts of battles. Part I is a narrative of three years of service. Part II includes detailed essays on the war in western Virginia, the Battle of Shiloh, and the Battle of Stones River.
