Description
Domingo F. Sarmiento’s Vida de Abraham Lincoln first hit the presses in 1865. This is the 1941 ed. of a very early–if not first–post assassination biography of the Abraham Lincoln. It is written in Spanish.
Sarmiento’s life parallels Lincoln’s in many ways. In addition to being a writer, teacher, journalist, and military officer, was a prominent politician and statesman who served as President of Argentina from 1868 to 1874. In his prologue, he writes: “Lincoln’s life is destined to be of great benefit as a lesson for nations. It is not the violence of the barbarian, forging his way with the hammer he wields upon his weaker comrades; it is not the demagogue who, in order to gain the upper hand, will leave behind an irreparable chasm. It is the honest farmer who studies the laws of his country and, recognizing the signs of the times, sets out to lead the people and succeeds… like all those who, with words, have guided the generous impulses of the people toward liberty, progress, and moral equality.” So well regarded, the book is still in print today.
Very good+, minor chipping to dj (with plastic cover, taped), evenly browned (as expected for the era). The book also has a former owner stamp;. indicating that is was from the library of noted Lincoln collector, Carl Wahlstrom. Also includes a newspaper clipping discussing the “French Influence Predominant in Modern Portuguese Literature.”
