Description

Here is a beautiful cabinet card of a handsome young officer of the New York National Guard made in New York City during the Tammany era.

The subject poses in a double-breasted officer’s coat with shoulder straps of a 1st Lieutenant. He wears a kepi with a crossed cannons device and the numeral 9, indicating membership in the 9th Regiment of the National Guard of New York. The regiment was famous as an infantry outfit but appears to have had artillery components during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. The photo has a presentation inscription reading “Yours Truly / G Bleamerbell.”

Photo made by the firm of E. K. & S. E. Hough at 487 8th Avenue in New York City. Eugene and Sylvester Hough operated the photo studio between 1878-1882, before relocating to Rochester, New York. They were known for working at the cutting edge of photographic technology. At their Rochester studio they introduced the dry plate method and cameras with virtually instant exposure times (New York Public Library, Photographers Identity Catalog).

Light foxing on photo; also toned and lightly foxed on verso with tape residue; else very good condition. A clear image and a dramatic pose by the mustachioed young officer.
