The Story of an Uncommon Regiment

Description

William H. Chenery was chosen to write The Fourteenth Regiment of Rhode Island Heavy Artillery (Colored) in the War to Preserve the Union, 1861-1865 by his comrades in the officer corps of that unit. He produced a detailed history of the regiment but also an authoritative account of African American military service in Rhode Island from the time of the Revolution to the end of the Civil War.

Chenery’s book introduces the reader to many local stories of Rhode Island, emancipation, and military service. He covers recruiting in the tiny state, issues involving prejudice against black troops, and the challenges of convincing men to volunteer under unjust circumstances. When the war takes the regiment to Louisiana the history continues to provide fascinating stories of little-known activities along the lower Mississippi River. If the 14th Rhode Island did not fight in any major battles, they nevertheless participated in extremely interesting and important operations.

Includes a detailed roster and thumbnail biographies of officers.
