Description

Addresses On The Death Of Hon. Stephen A. Douglas, Delivered In The Senate And House Of Representatives On Tuesday, July 9, 1861, is a collection of congressional speeches delivered in honor of Stephen A. Douglas after his untimely death.

The June 3, 1861, death of Senator Douglas hit the nation hard. “The Little Giant” had been a fixture on the political scene for decades and a candidate for the presidency just a few months previous. His full-blooded support of the Union helped unite the north at the beginning of the war. On July 9 his colleagues took to the floor of Congress to pay tribute.

Republican and political rival Isaac Arnold of Illinois stated, “the sentiment of deep regret caused by his death pervades all classes and parties and divisions of our country, and finds an exception only among traitors who are in arms against our flag.”

Wrappers almost detached by chipping at spine; else excellent. Scarce.
